Ognissanti (Church of All Saints)

Friday we walked to the Church of All Saints, which faces the Arno River. The artist Ghirlandaio did much of the artwork there in the late 15th century. Michelangelo was apprenticed to him and assisted on some of the frescoes.

The front of the church is fairly unassuming. There is a small piazza in front, then the street that parallels the river.

The apse at the front of the church. It is highly decorative.

The ceiling is covered with images and has an interesting use of perspective.

A famous painting by Ghirlandaio is this of St. Jerome at his desk, done in 1480.

On the opposite side of the nave is a matching picture, this one of St. Augustine done by Botticelli, also in 1480.

Botticelli is buried in this church. We saw signs for it but couldn't locate the tomb.  There is also a famous Last Supper by Ghirlandaio in the rectory, but it wasn't open.

This church has no entry fee, unlike most of the others in Florence. It was awe-inspiring to be surrounded by so much beautiful art, most of it more than 500 years old.
