The Pen-Y-Gwryd Hotel

Last night I posted a photo of this hotel taken from their website. It is a very interesting building, first built in 1810, originally as a farmhouse but extended to an inn. It is a rabbit warren of rooms, with 4-5 public rooms on the ground floor, some near each other and one (the game room) quite a bit down a hallway.

Our room is fine, but nothing spectacular. We did choose a room with en suite bath. A number of the rooms don't have that. Here is one of the bathing rooms available along the hallway.

The dining room seats about two dozen people. We are quite far from the nearest town, so I believe all the diners are also staying here. The majority appeared to be male and some of them we talked to were planning on hiking today.

This is the room attached to the small bar. It has many pictures of former residents, many of them related to the Everest expedition. There are many photos of the climbers meeting here for regular reunions.

This plaque and photo in the hallway commemorate the 1998 reunion with the list of those attending. Hillary and Norgay were still alive and able to come. James Morris was the writer in the group, later transitioning to Jan Morris. An excellent travel writer.

This room has hikers' boots donated to hang from the beam.

The game room is at the end of a long corridor. It is the only room with internet access. We are lucky; our room is right above it, so we are in the only room with internet!
